I recently got hip to the talented Emily King. She has such a rich tone, and her voice reminds me of Esperanzo Spalding. She opens her studio session with "Distance," a song of hers I'm most familiar with. I love the picture she paints with the lyrics. It's a beautiful love song. She has her own sound, which I am currently working on establishing. She touches on her journey to finding her sound, and how she writes melodies that her fitting for her. This is inspiring to me! I'm currently taking voice lessons, and am learning what my true strengths are. I'm learning how well you have to know yourself and be in tune with your capabilities. I'm excited to get to that eureka moment in my own artistry.
I had a pleasure of performing with the talented Sebastian Francis (@SebastianFMusic) at the Formula at Aisle 5 last Sunday! The event was Epic! He brought out his longtime friend Deep, and they really turned it up! So grateful for the opportunity. Photos were taken by Elias Zamudio (@ellmatik).
This weekend was Atlanta's annual Jazz Festival! I was so hype to be able to go again, because it's truly a memorable event. The event is free and it's right in Downtown Atlanta. I didn't know Robert Glasper was performing, but when I walked up and saw his name, I just had to stay til the end of the night. I've recently gotten hip to his music, and literally played his Black Radio album almost everyday for two weeks. I even was inspired by his arrangement of "Cherish the Day" by Sade that Lalah Hathaway sang on, and did a cover video on YouTube.
Needless to say, the concert was epic and one I will never forget. Honestly, it was so inspiring. The band started with "Cherish the Day" and morphed into so many different songs, using samples and all. The band was so smooth and funky. At times it felt like all the musicians were playing to their own groove, but it meshed! Robert Glasper is a funny character. He was absolutely hilarious, and he even sang a song! He made a disclaimer: "If I'm good cheer, if I'm not cheer." He clearly knew he wasn't a vocalist, but the song he shared was great. I also really enjoyed the lead singer, Casey Benjamin, with his vocoder. Every other Monday I post a YouTube video for #MusicMonday and this particular video is a montage of my event, Home For The Holidays. I hosted this event, along with the rapper Memnon the Black, on December 27th at Grapevine Cafe in my hometown, Fredericksburg, Virginia. The musical event was hosted by actor, Omari Bailey. Performers included The Nature Boy Collective, Mic L. Shawn, Erica Danielle, and TSoul.
This past Saturday I went to check out the Fantazm music event in LA! These musicians gave so much life on the stage! From singers, rappers, dj's, to saxophone players!! I enjoyed myself!! I love hearing new music! Underground Hip-Hop, R&B, Rock, etc.! |
