When music is crashing around us, when you hear the same five songs on the radio that aren't really saying much, we can always go back to great music. Great music always lives on.
I am a fan of radio and mainstream music, but I also understand that music is just a small portion of all the really great compositions out there. I enjoy timeless music. I like a lot of different genres, and listen to them regularly. It's always good to expose yourself to new sounds.
This weekend was Atlanta's annual Jazz Festival! I was so hype to be able to go again, because it's truly a memorable event. The event is free and it's right in Downtown Atlanta. I didn't know Robert Glasper was performing, but when I walked up and saw his name, I just had to stay til the end of the night. I've recently gotten hip to his music, and literally played his Black Radio album almost everyday for two weeks. I even was inspired by his arrangement of "Cherish the Day" by Sade that Lalah Hathaway sang on, and did a cover video on YouTube.
Needless to say, the concert was epic and one I will never forget. Honestly, it was so inspiring. The band started with "Cherish the Day" and morphed into so many different songs, using samples and all. The band was so smooth and funky. At times it felt like all the musicians were playing to their own groove, but it meshed! Robert Glasper is a funny character. He was absolutely hilarious, and he even sang a song! He made a disclaimer: "If I'm good cheer, if I'm not cheer." He clearly knew he wasn't a vocalist, but the song he shared was great. I also really enjoyed the lead singer, Casey Benjamin, with his vocoder. I don't regret any decisions I've made in my life. I believe that everything happens for a reason, so I really don't regret anything. Even when situations are bad, I tend to find the good in them and focus on that. Everything is a learning experience and will somehow teach you something you need to know later in life.
Lately I've been checking out vacation beach houses.... but someday I'll be living in one. I love the beach and this house is beautiful! #VisionBoard
I consider my musical ability to be a gift from the Creator. It's not that I try to work hard or nothing like that, it's a gift, it was given to me, and I appreciate it. This is honestly how I consider my musical ability as well! I know that my voice is a gift from God, and that's why I believe my life's purpose is to share music. I don't know what I would do if I couldn't sing, and I can't imagine life without being able to express myself in that way. I knew at such a young age what I wanted to spend my lifetime doing. No matter what's going wrong in my world, when I turn to music, all is at peace. Whether I'm performing, songwriting, listening, or teaching music, I'm living my dream. I understand the process and am enjoying this journey.
Erykah Badu is a true original and completely embodies her uniqueness. I love watching her perform, because she sings so effortlessly. Her voice is etherial, yet soulful, where she doesn't really push or try. I've always enjoyed her music, and studying her metaphoric lyrics. Her songs really make me think, which is key for me. I remembered the first time I saw her at the Genius Talks at the BET Experience in LA two years ago, and seeing how down to earth and humble she was.
I wanted to sell a million records, and I sold a million records. I wanted to go platinum; I went platinum. I've been working nonstop since I was 15. I don't even know how to chill out. I appreciate Beyoncé's dedication and work ethic! She's just a great example of success that really takes hard work! I've been a fan since the Destiny's Child days. Lately , I have really been focusing on what I want and planning to bring it to fruition. I really believe things are going so well for me here in Atlanta so far, because I spoke it and believed it! And of course prayyyyed. But what's prayer if you don't have faith? #believe
I'll be posting new cover videos every Monday! I've been studying Sade for a couple months now. Beautiful music! Enjoy! Watch, like, comment, and share 😊
